Remember that efficiency and economy are two different things. There are some very expensive ways to save energy, but in order to be sustainable, energy savings must also be financial savings.
We will be changing these tips from time to time:
· Older refrigerators are energy hogs. It can often pay to recycle an old one, and buy a new energy star rated model. Pay back can be in as little as three years—after that you are saving money on every power bill!
· Replace your incandescent light bulbs with the new compact fluorescent lamps (CFL). Some say that if every household in the country replaced just one incandescent with a CFL that would reduce greenhouse gases the equivalent of removing one million cars from the road. Remember that most CFL’s are not dimmable.
· Install dimmers on any fixtures where CFL’s are not practical. They will save energy and considerably extend the life of the lamps at the same time.
· Add insulation wherever possible—if you live in an older house, this will save you money, energy, and increase your comfort.
· A word about windows—replacing old windows with new insulated low-E energy efficient windows will greatly increase comfort, and will add thousands to the resale value of your home. Just do not expect them to save any money in the short term. The pay back period for windows can be 20 or 30 years, or longer. |
